Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2001 Behrens & Hitchcock "Homage to Ed Oliveira/Alder Springs Vineyard" Mendocino County Syrah (94RP, 92ST, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The dense opaque purple-colored 2001 Syrah Alder Springs Vineyard Homage to Ed Oliveira is a wine of tremendous intensity as well as a big, smoky, blackberry and blueberry-scented nose with hints of licorice as well as truffles. Dense, opulent, and voluptuous, it is a hedonistic Syrah to enjoy over the next 7-8 years. I admire what Les Behrens, Bob Hitchcock, their wives, friends, and lunatic dog are doing at their winery and cellars on the top of Spring Mountain. They are obsessed fanatics who make wine with no compromises...obviously my kind of people. (RP)" (12/2003)

Bright, deep ruby. Slightly reduced aromas of roasted berries, violet, bacon fat, animal fur and dark chocolate. Concentrated, dense and sweet, with powerful flavors of blackberry, blueberry, dark chocolate and game. Finishes with strong torrefaction notes and excellent length. (ST)
A rich, concentrated style that zeros in on a core of spicy blackberry and wild berry fruit. Full-bodied and well-structured, it holds a tight focus and finishes with intensity and depth, with fine-grained tannins keeping the grapey flavors alive. (JL)
