Bid on this bottle of 1983 E. Guigal "La Mouline" Côte-Rôtie (98JG, (95-97RP)). John Gilman: "It had been years since I last tasted the ’83 La Mouline, and the wine has finally reached its magical apex of quality, and is clearly one of the great vintages of this profound wine to have ever been made. In a vintage where so many of the northern Rhônes have failed to meet the early expectations, the ’83 La Mouline is a blazingly beautiful rendition of the vintage, soaring from the glass in a majestic blend of red and black raspberries, coffee, black pepper, game tones, hot stones, cocoa powder, citric tones and a topnote faintly redolent of lavender. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and velvety, with stunning complexity, a great core of fruit, melting tannins, sound acids, and great length and grip on the peacock’s tail of a finish. This is a toweringly profound vintage of La Mouline that has apogeed, and will continue to drink marvelously for decades to come." (03/2006)

The nose does not give much away with cherry, dried apricots and kirsch with a discernible volatility. The palate is full-bodied and hedonistic with fairly low acidity, ultra ripe fruits. Super-concentrated: this might be too much for some, certainly not for the faint hearted. But after all that, I kinda love it. (NM)
Very very deep colour. Very gloriously complete. Bonfire smell, spicy, exotic, complete. Absolutely no drop in the middle palate. Dangerously volatile. Dances rather than sings. 20/20 points (JR)
