The 2001 Christoffel Ürziger Würzgarten Spätlese is a beautiful example of both this vintage and the gossamer-strung, dancing style of this estate in its prime. I had tasted a bottle of this six months ago that was easy-going and a bit simple, and I was so happy to have another bottle and see that the first bottle was simply unrepresentative. The bouquet is vibrant and pure, offering up scents of strawberry, pear, bee pollen, salty slate, just a whisper of fresh apricot and violets in the upper register. On the palate the wine is pure, medium-bodied and glossy on the attack, with a beautifully filigreed and seamless palate impression, bright acids and a very long, very complex and dancing finish/ A gorgeous Spätlese at its apogee today, but with years and years of life still ahead of it.
Christoffel's 2001 Riesling Spatlese Urziger Wurzgarten has a delicate nose, revealing primarily floral and perfume notes. On the palate, however, it is every bit as rich as the Erdener Treppchen. Assorted red fruits, honeysuckle, flint, and sweet minerals are found in this offering's considerable depth. A complete wine, it has laser-like focus and crystalline purity while being thick, dense, and expansive. (PR)
Delicacy of strawberry and vanilla in the nose is consistent with a delicate strawberry-chiffon character on the palate. A great deal of sweetness wells up here, but then a tart note of pear skin, faintly bitter vanilla, and smoky, salty and stony expressions of slate rush in and establish an uncanny balance of flavors and finishing sweetness.
