Elegant and fruity at the same time with a quick invitation from bright, pure cherryish notes and then filled out handsomely by whiffs of chalky soils and well-integrated, rich and uplifting yeast-driven scents, this wine manages to be both vigorous and layered at one and the same time. Its bubbles are insistent, finely carved and add to the early sensations of lightness and energy yet also carry the wine long into a balanced, refined finish. And its latter palate grip is exactly what one should expect from the genre. While service with light foods would be our first choice, this one has the beauty to stand alone. *Three Stars*
The NV Cuvée Rosé Brut is 100% Pinot Noir based on 2008 (90%). The color is an intense orange-colored pink and the nose offers beautifully subtle, but also deep, intense flavors of ripe and macerated Pinot Noir and lemon. There is also great purity and finesse on the structured palate. The finish is fresh and reveals a perfect fruit. This Rosé drinks almost like a light red wine. (SR)
Laurent Perrier first released this rosé in 1968, well before it became fashionable to have a pink-hued Champagne in the portfolio. 100% Pinot Noir is sourced from both the north and south sectors of the Montagne de Reims sub-region, and famously draws its colour from skin contact rather than the more usual addition of red wine. It has striking freshness on the nose, bags of pure, zippy strawberry and raspberry fruit flavours, and satisfying vivacity. It's beautifully balanced with a long finish, and calls for a carpaccio of raw salmon. (YC)
The non-vintage Laurent-Perrier Brut Rosé out of magnum was drinking very well indeed on my last visit to Burgundy in June, offering up a deep and soil-driven personality on both the nose and palate that works best with food, rather than served as an aperitif. The bouquet is a fine and complex blend of cherries, blood orange, rye toast, a classy base of soil, citrus peel and an overtly smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and beautifully balanced, with a fine core, bright acids, elegant mousse and a very long, transparent and refined finish. Given that this wine was in magnum, the odds are pretty good that this is the previous release of the non-vintage Brut Rosé from Laurent-Perrier, so I am not sure if the slightly different showings of the two examples are indicative of slightly different wines for the American and French markets, or if this is simply a function of two different releases. In any case, this is extremely good juice.
Shows a linear line of crisp acidity and vivid fruit of dried strawberries and orange peel. Full-bodied, tight and focused with a bright finish. Fruity yet vivid. Commanding.
Vivid orange-pink. An expressive, spice-accented bouquet evokes fresh raspberry, orange pith, white flowers and ginger, with a hint of rhubarb adding an earthy flourish. Sappy and broad in the mouth, offering intense red fruit and bitter citrus flavors underscored by chalky mineral and white pepper notes. Rich yet lively rosé with excellent closing thrust and floral persistence. (JR)
This wine is both rich and soft. It combines the ripeness of red-fruit flavors and a creamy texture with a crisp edge of citrus acidity. A tight tannic edge gives it shape, adds to its richness and provides an intense, long-lasting afertaste. (RV)
Firm and finely knit, this offers richness in a sleek frame, with crushed raspberry, blood orange peel, smoke and toasted almond notes set on the satiny mousse. The finish echoes subtle saffron and spice accents. (AN)
Pinot Noir berries are destemmed, then macerate for two to three days on the skins, providing this wine’s light color and the brisk tannins that bring to mind crushed pink peppercorns. It’s a gastronomic Champagne, austere and potent, with dark-toned flavors that leave the mouth refreshed.
