Black fruits are interspersed with licorice and earth in the nose of the medium to full-bodied 2002 Chambertin Clos de Beze. This concentrated, deep, noble wine is crammed with perfectly ripe fruit and tannin. Loads of blackberries, licorice, plums, black cherries, stones, and flowers can be discerned in its complex flavor profile. Its finish, described in my notes as 'completely unreal,' is exceedingly long, fruit-filled, and suave. If stored in a cold cellar, this wine would be an ideal selection for serving to a 2002 baby on his or her 21st birthday. (PR)
This is one of the great Burgundies of 2002. It shows the power of the year, with huge black fruits and dense tannins. But it also shows the charm, with ripeness that promises a precocious development as well as long aging. (RV)
A delicious infusion of terroir and fruit highlights this intense, backward red. It's muscular, evoking cherry, tobacco and mineral aromas and flavors wrapped in its vivid, firm structure. The tannins are beautifully integrated and there's a mineral component on the finish. *Collectibles* (BS)
A clear and unmistakable notch up as there is more of everything with bigger, denser and more powerful flavors that are spicier and purer aromatically as well. In particular, the intensity here is almost painful with a controlled and focused power that is something to experience with a firmly tannic spine that will require at least a decade to even begin to unwind. A great effort that will require patience and a cool cellar. Drink: 2014-27+
Good deep red. Subtly complex nose melds red fruits, rose petal, minerals and musky soil tones. Lush, rich, silky and deep; densely packed and already quite expressive, with strong smoke and earth notes. Really explodes on the back end, finishing with utterly seamless tannins and superb palate-saturating minerality. (ST)
