This is the first "Chateau" Cabernet Sauvignon that Montelena produced. The 1973 vintage was a sterling Cabernet vintage, from which the talented (if novice) winemaking staff produced a big, rich, mouth filling wine. In order to develop further complexities through mellowing, an extended aging period of two years in French (Never) and American oak barrels was necessary. The resulting '73 Cabernet is a skillful balance between power and elegance. 3,000 cases of this wine were made, one wonders how many unopened bottles are still around!
