Disgorged in January 2015, this has a majestic, commanding and rich nose. Aromas of spiced blood orange, grilled nuts and honey all make for a complex and engaging proposition; there's a toffee and brulée-like layer too, with baked apples and spice. The palate's bold, powerful and makes a grand statement of black grape depth. Flavorsome blueberry, cherry and peach pastry notes run long amid smooth-honed phenolics. Drink now or up to five years if you prefer to embrace more richness.
This is Francis Egly’s flagship, accounting for more than half of his production. He selects the blend from his vineyards in Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzenay, blending Pinot Noir (70 percent) and Chardonnay from vines between 35 and 40 years old. He ferments 20 percent of the wine in barrel, that oak adding boldness to the aroma and toughness to the structure, while the searing, mineral-tinged acidity cleans up any hint of wood in the finish. This is vinous and youthfully powerful, its fruit complexity earned in scents of green almond, golden apple and pear. Give this a year or two in your cellar to rest and evolve.
The NV Brut Tradition Grand Cru is gorgeous. Rich, resonant and expressive on the palate, but with the freshness that is now part of the house style, the Brut Tradition is wonderfully complete. Dried pear, smoke, crushed flowers and chamomile are finely-knit in this super-appealing, mid-weight Champagne. The current release spent 54 months on its lees, which is decidedly on the long side for a wine in its peer group. Then again, long aging is one of the things that distinguishes these very special, artisan Champagnes from the pack. Disgorged: January 2017. (AG)
The NV Brut Tradition Grand Cru is a blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay from Ambonnay that is disgorged after four years on the lees. The recent release is based on the 2010 vintage and was disgorged in 2015 with three or four grams of dosage. It is a very clear and finesse-full, but also complex and firmly structured cuvée with grip, tension and a long finish. (SR)
This balanced version is lightly honeyed and juicy, with a lacy mousse and flavors of toast, crushed black currant and candied ginger. Offers a clean-cut, chalk-tinged finish. Disgorged November 2015. Drink now through 2019. 300 (AN)
