Blended of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, the 2000 Cos d'Estournel is deep garnet in color with a touch of brick and sporting a lot of tertiary evolution on the nose. It leaps from the glass with opulent sandalwood, Chinese five spice, cigar box and leather scents over a core of prunes, baked cherries, dried mulberries and eucalyptus plus a touch of potpourri. Medium-bodied, the palate is laden with fragrant fruitcake and exotic spice layers, framed by wonderfully plush tannins and a refreshing line, finishing with an exhilarating menthol lift. (LPB)
Cos puts together serious reds in serious years, and with large production for a relatively reasonable price. Cos's head, Jean-Guillaume Prats, has made the property's best red since 1989. Gorgeous on the nose, with currants, blackberries and cut flowers, it is full-bodied, with ultrafine tannins and a solid core of fruit. Goes on and on. It is the essence of class and refinement. *Ranked #2 on the Top 100 Wines of 2003*
Right away this hits you with loads of spices that go into curry, think cinnamon and cardamon. Full-bodied and rich, but refreshing and long with spices and cherries. This is very long and silky, a real beauty.
Full ruby-red. Cassis, minerals, cedar and a floral note on the nose, along with an herbal currant leaf component. Juicy and tight; hints at the power of the vintage but misses out on the sweetness and pliancy of the best examples.
