The Rafanelli family has been making wine in California's Dry Creek Valley since before Prohibition, though the grapes for this cabernet were planted in 1986 on a steep, terraced hillside behind the winery. Known for his "Old School" winemaking style, this is a savory, cherry-filled, unfiltered cab with earth, leathern and chewy tannins. Its intense, mountain fruit structure will have mellowed over the years, softening the edges for a beautiful glass at this weekend's dinner party.
