Marchesi di Barolo (which used to be known as Opera Pia Barolo) is one of the region's most historic wineries. Marchesi Falletti was a former proprietor of the estate in the early 1800s and is widely considered to be the creator of what is now known as Barolo. The wines made here were and continue to be Nebbiolos of great breed and complexity. In the best vintages, and 1988 was certainly among them, batches of grapes of the finest quality are vinified separately and matured in traditional oak casks for two to three years. After an additional two to three years in bottle, the wine is finally released. This '88 is still quite young with lots of life ahead of it. The bottle condition is also truly immaculate. A must for the Barolo collector.
