This smells of Port and raisin, with tanned leather as well. Totally decadent. Full-bodied, offering wonderful fruit and a blockbuster palate of chewy rich tannins. What outrageous opulence and wonder. Shows so much fruit, with mature and aged character, with a soft, yet chewy palate. An old style of great wine. This may end up being the 'new' legendary 1970. Just coming around, a beautiful surprise.—'89/'99 Bordeaux blind retrospective (2009). (JS, Web Only-2010)
The 1989 Giscours is the first reassuringly fine wine made at this property since the 1983. It exhibits a black/ruby color, and a big, forceful bouquet of overripe plums and licorice. In the mouth, the wine has the tell-tale succulent character of the vintage, a chewy texture, excellent concentration, high alcohol, low acidity, and a long, opulent finish. It should prove seductive and heady to nearly everyone. (RP)
Bright red with an amber rim. Delicate nose hints at blackcurrant, dried herbs, cinnamon, cedar and loam. Clean and fresh in the mouth, with sneaky concentration to the floral red cherry and plum flavors complicated by graphite, tar and coffee. This is more concentrated and longer than the '90 and '86.
