Bin 389 has often referred to as 'Poor Man's Grange' or 'Baby Grange,' and like Grange this wine exemplifies Penfolds' skill in balancing fruit and oak. A classic Australian style with a clear Penfolds identity, the 2002 was sourced from vineyards in McLaren Vale, Padthaway, Bordertown, Barossa Valley and Langhorne Creek. The wine was matured for twelve months in 22% new, 67% one-year-old and older American oak hogsheads. Vibrant, lively aromas are immediately apparent without any need to swirl the glass. Aromas of mocha meshed with concentrated Satsuma plum, licorice and cold meats. Subtle smoky oak and background florals complete the offering. Full flavored and persistent across the palate and displaying great balance between fruit, oak, acid and tannin. Blackberry and blackcurrant fruit flavors, joined by mouth puckering cabernet tannins, effortlessly convey chocolatey, mocha flavors and cedary oak. WOW.
