The best bottle of this I have had to date, the 1999 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau is drinking at point and possesses gorgeous aromatics of spiced meat, leather, and mature Grenache fruit. Medium bodied, balanced, clean and with a fantastic texture, this should continue to drink beautifully over the next 8 to 10 years.
Holding up remarkably well, the 1999 Châteauneuf du Pape shows some scents of decay, including hints of dead leaves and cigar, but it remains silky and nicely balanced on the medium to full-bodied palate. It finishes long, on notes of dried cherries and black tea. Drink up over the next few years. (JC)
Beautiful Rhône red. Full-bodied, rich and ripe, with plum and blackberry notes and some real tannic grip. Mineral edge adds complexity to this impressive Châteauneuf. Built for the cellar. (PM)
Bright red-ruby. Smoky, complex nose of dark berries, minerals, gunflint and roasted meat. Full, sweet and deep; not especially lively in the middle today but offers very good density and richness for the vintage, not to mention an extroverted personality. Then finishes with a note of almost mentholated freshness and building but broad tannins. Should develop gracefully in bottle. (ST)
