Even better from bottle than from cask, and one of the finest wines of the vintage, this dense purple-colored 2002 reveals wonderfully sweet notes of charcoal, fresh mushrooms, smoke, earth, leather, cassis, and cedar. Full-bodied, highly extracted, broodingly backward, dense, and deep, this impressively endowed offering is built for the long term. (RP)
Good deep ruby-red. Complex nose melds black cherry, cedar, graphite, menthol and chocolate. Cool, penetrating flavors of blue and black fruits, minerals, licorice and menthol, with hints of chocolatey ripeness. Rather laid-back Bordeaux , with the structure for mid-term aging. Finishes with firm but fine tannins and lovely length. (ST) 91+
Candied fruit, cherry/blueberry compote and Cabernet bouquet. Good purity of expression in a poor vintage. Confident, attractive tannins and appealing weight of fruit. Will reward keeping. A classic Claret.
Deep crimson with a little evolution at the rim. Meaty, concentrated nose. Uncompromisingly dry but the tannins are not too painful. Just starting to come round and really not that different from this wine in a more successful vintage. But strictly for classicists. 17/20 points. (JR)
