The 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve Auguste Favier is medium to full-bodied, elegant and silky on the palate and gives up classic red and black berry fruit, white pepper, smoked garrigue and sandalwood-styled aromas and flavors. It’s drinking at point, but will continue to shine for another couple years and evolve gracefully after that. (JD)
Perfumy style, with elegant red and black cherry, raspberry and spice flavors shaded by mineral, floral and toast hints. Long, supple finish is atypical for '03. Still, don't be fooled—there's stuffing here for cellaring too. (JM)
A very interesting brand new domaine which was taken over by Isabel Ferrando, a wine fanatic who had previously been a banker but who managed to do a deal with the previous owner only in 2002, year of the terrible rains. Her training was at Raspail in Gigondas and she has clearly learnt well. This blend of Grenache with old Cinsault, Syrah and Mourvèdre is extremely charming (and had been bottled less than a week before I tasted it). Deep crimson, rich, briary nose – oozes character. Smooth, flattering palate entry and then very well handled tannins. Fresh and lively – perhaps thanks to that Cinsault. Lots of personality and you certainly could argue this is a feminine style of Châteauneuf. 17.5/20 points (JR)
