Thin rocky soils and rugged terrain on Mount Veeder make farming this steep mountain vineyard a challenge. On these crusty slopes, water is limited so the vines on this 40-acre estate see little irrigation. Thin shale and ash soils dramatically limit vigor reducing yields by half of what valley floor vineyards see. Cultivation and harvesting is painstaking, arduous and done entirely by hand. All that hard work is rewarded in this 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon, which offers a bright beam of blackberry and currant fruit wrapped around a core of firm, elegant tannins and structure galore.
