The hardest wine in this portfolio to figure out was the 2003 Petite Syrah Rattlesnake Ridge. It is a monster, but its tannins are so severe and the wine so painfully concentrated and extracted as to be so totally unevolved. It tasted as if it were only several months old. There are 175 cases (14.7% alcohol) of this blockbuster. It will undoubtedly settle down, with the tannins becoming more integrated, but certainly it is a huge wine that needs to be forgotten for at least a decade. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it drink well 30-50 years from now.
