First the good news… for the second year in a row the Evans Ranch Syrah is a blockbuster. Now the bad news… this is most likely the last time Kenneth Crawford will make this wine. It seems that the winery that owns Evans Ranch has caught on to the potential of the Syrah coming out of there and is going to work more closely with it from here on out. Everything about this wine is more RED this year. The color is a deep and luxurious candy apple red with a purple center. On the nose it is predominately red fruits-cherry, red plum and sweet red berries. That classic cool-climate pepper is there as well, but it is more like white pepper this year. The same flavors persist on the palate with an added dimension of earth. There is tar and tobacco leaf and a strong backbone of acid and tannin that will keep this wine vibrant for years to come.
