The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon was aged 19 months in about two-thirds new French oak, and achieved 14.7% alcohol. The wine reveals a sensational nose of creme de cassis, graphite and spring flowers as well as a beautiful texture and a wonderful starting point, mid-palate and finish. A pure, unmanipulated, stylish yet complex, majestic Cabernet Sauvignon, it should age effortlessly for two more decades. There is always something about Larkmead’s Cabernets that reminds me of the great Pauillac estate adjacent to Mouton Rothschild, Alfred Tesseron’s Pontet-Canet. (RP)
Full ruby-red. Brooding aromas of cassis and menthol, with a whiff of sweet butter. Dense and chewy on the palate, with spicy flavors of currant, bitter chocolate and espresso. Less fruity than the Firebelle, but more serious-and more Cabernet. (ST)
