K&L Notes

Barrel sample according to Clyde Beffa, K&L's Bordeaux Buyer: "60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. Steely aromas and old school flavors. Has good sweetness on palate. 12000 cases. Cassis and red fruit. More purity of fruit, depth and richness than we've ever seen from this fine property. This could be a value. .5*" (04/04)

This was a hit at the Hollywood Bordeaux Tasting in November. More elegant than ripe this wine was more medium bodied with spice and herbs on the nose. On the palate lots of ripe red fruit with cedar and oak in the background. The elegant finish of herbal flavors and cherry will make you open a second bottle. This is a lovely wine from a classified 3rd growth is really a steal at $40.

Soft, sweet cherry fruit with delicate inner mouth floral aromas and very good balance, especially for the vintage. Useful wine reminder - you can't always pre-judge a wine based on its vintage! While this is ripe, it is still quite balanced and possessing enough of interest to keep this intrepid drinker in to this bottle.

I'm always excited to taste Bordeaux, and when I saw that the 2003 La Lagune was opened I was very excited to get to see how this wine was progressing. If this wine is any indication of what the 2003 Bordeaux vintage has to offer down the road, then we are all in for a treat. The 2003 La Lagune was excellent! A sumptuous ruby red in the glass followed by aromas of red berries, volcanic rock and slight nuances of mocha-laced oak. On the palate, the wine displayed amazing balance and complexity with rich, satisfying red fruit nicely balanced by fine tannins. This wine has a front, mid and back palate presence with surprising depth of fruit, complexity and power. This wine far exceeded my expectations and will definitely be included in my next purchase.

Located just north of Bordeaux itself, across from Château Cantemerle, the wines here often evoke the elegance of nearby Margaux. The 2003 is typical of the best of the vintage, sweet and richly textured with soft tannins. At less than $40, the wine is a superb value in a Troisième Cru Classé that can be enjoyed tonight.
