Named for the finest type of Tuna, this is based on vineyard holdings in the Ballard Canyon area of the greater Santa Ynez Valley. From top to bottom it covers, Purisima Mountain way up top, Stolpman Vineyard right in the middle, and Larner Vineyard down at the South-end. Also thrown in was a barrel of Lafond Vineyard to deepen the color, add even more richness, and maybe pick-up a little pepper and spice. The blend was put together after malolactic fermentation and evolved in barrel for another 13 months. The total time in barrel for this wine was 18 months. It has roughly one-third new French oak from Marsannay and Sirugue. The blend is comprised of 50% Larner Syrah, clones 383 and 174, 20% Purisima Mountain Syrah, Estrella clone, 20% Stolpman Syrah, clone 3 and 10% Lafond Syrah, Estrella clone. The nose has a core of dark fruits - blueberry, blackberry and black cherry. There is also the telltale cool climate profile with black pepper, earth, tobacco leaf and a slate-like mineral component. At first this wine is sleek and mouthwatering, but at its core is a rich fleshy texture that is certain to develop and move more center stage as the wine evolves.
