From a vineyard planted in 1927, this blend of 92% Zinfandel and the rest Carignan, Petite Sirah, and a few other Mediterranean red grapes possesses a dark purple color in addition to an elegant, fresh, lively nose of red and black fruits, damp earth, pepper, and spice. Full-bodied, rich, zesty, and lively, it is a stunning Zinfandel to drink over the next 5-8 years. One of California's most compelling success stories is Mike Officer's conversion from full-time software developer to full-time guardian of old vine Zinfandel vineyards and world-class producer of artisinal wines. Carlisle is a hugely successful winery, not only because of outstanding customer service, but because of the simple fact that it delivers great wines at extremely fair prices. (RP)
Bright purple. Black raspberry, peppered bacon and floral aromas reminded me of a wine from the northern Rhone. Fleshy and sweet on the palate, with vivid raspberry and blackberry and candied violet qualities. Fine-grained tannins add structure and grip to the long, juicy finish, which echoes the pepper and floral notes. Mike Officer told me that these vines were planted in 1927. (ST)
Deeply structured yet light on its feet, with wild berry and licorice aromas that lead to fleshy black cherry and smoky pepper flavors framed by lively acidity. Needs time to open up in the glass. (TF)
