Cabernet Sauvignon at Phelps is represented by the opulent 2004 Napa, a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot. A sexy style of Cabernet, dark ruby/purple-colored, with notes of subtle herbs intermixed with black currant, cedar, and spice. (RP)
Good deep ruby-red. Blackcurrant syrup, menthol and nutty oak on the nose. Rich, creamy and very ripe, with high-toned black fruit flavors nicely framed by sound acidity. Quite substantial for this bottling. Finishes with building tannins and a sizable structure. This has turned out well. (ST)
Rich in caramel and toasty first impressions and well-fruited in its black cherry, ripe plum and quietly herbal aromas, this wine has less of the high ripeness that follows so many in this vintage, but it does have the fruit and succeeds because of it. Its tannins are noticeable in the latter palate and add a touch of bitterness, but a bit of bottle age will smooth it out. *One Star*
Very pure, virtually saintly clarity to the blackcurrant flavour, and choc-mint secondary characters too. Dry, absolutely focused ripe and juicy fruit. Natural flavours, organic tasting, if there is such a thing. Immensely lengthy too, and only just hinting at the development to come, despite being very approachable now. 17+/20 points (RH)
Shows the deft Phelps Cabernet touch, with softly complex tannins that frame ripe blackberry, cherry, spice and new oak flavors. So easy to like, you might not even notice the complexities of structure that keep you reaching for another sip.
An elegant style, with ripe, vibrant currant and black cherry fruit that's well-defined, keeping the focus on the fruit while adding a cedary oak overlay. (JL)
