An utterly brilliant and benchmark Amarone from one of the Veneto’s greatest and most lauded families. This was a fabulous way to finish a truly great tasting. According to Marilisa Allegrini, 2001 was an excellent vintage in the Veneto. During the spring, average rainfall and temperatures were well within the norm. July and August were hot but also enjoyed average rainfall. Then came a hot, dry autumn which continued to ripen the grapes to perfection. It shows in the wine, which is polished, fresh, ripe and unbelievably balanced. So much so that you almost miss the 15.5% alcohol. This Amarone is very much the iron fist in a velvet glove, with incredibly supple tannins, and a sublime compote of flavours spanning coffee bean, prune, raisin, juniper, liquorice, chocolate, sweet damson and plum, smoked meat and spice box. This shows so much dried cherries and fruit with flowers. This is very dense and rich with Christmas cake and fruit. Chewy and delicious.
The estate’s 2001 Amarone is simply fabulous. Layers of floral, mineral-infused dark fruit emerge from the glass as the wine opens up. This is an impeccable, brilliant wine that beautifully reconciles elements of ripeness and freshness in a full-bodied style that will reward cellaring. The 2001 Amarone is gorgeous today, but readers who prefer more tertiary notes will want to wait a few years as the fruit is still quite fresh. (AG)
A superclean, juicy Amarone, with concentrated dried black fruit and a well-concealed, smooth oak note. Full-bodied, with fine tannins that give the palate an elegant poise and prolong the fruity finish. Classy and refined, with a long finish. (JC)
Corvina 75%, Rondinella 20%, Molinara 5%. Aged in 100% new barriques. Impenetrably dark with narrow, orange-tinged rim. Rich and concentrated, but not overtly sweet. Completely integrated oak. Lots of dark fruit, kitchen spice and hints of appassito dried fruit, but very clean. Only ever so slightly alcoholic on the nose. Almost lip-smacking acidity and rich, ripe fruit. Quite powerful tannin, buffered by sweet, concentrated dark fruit. 4 g/l RS. Still at the beginning of its evolution. 17.5/20 points (WS)
Deep, dark ruby-black color. Port-like aromas of chocolate and cherries macerated in alcohol, with complicating notes of plum, black pepper and game. Rich and suave in the mouth; fat, sweet and fruit-driven, with a touch of cedary oak adding interest to the flavors of smoky plum and blackcurrant. Ultimately, though, the wine's strong tannins detract somewhat from its pleasure factor today, though they're likely to resolve with some bottle aging. (ID)
