The 2004 Sagrantino di Montefalco Collepiano is a seamless beauty. Made in a full-bodied style, it offers gorgeous layers of dark cherries, wild herbs, underbrush and leather with a powerful, authoritative personality. Decidedly modern in its interpretation, it is an outstanding wine in every way. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020.
Very dark, healthy crimson with some shading already. Lowkey nose. Quite dramatic, focussed, ripe, almost fireworks/volcanic fruit. Lots and lots of tannin! It would be an act of faith to buy this now; the finish is just SO tough... (16++/20 points) (JR)
Inky ruby. Aromas of blackberry, dark chocolate, eucalyptus and minerals. Begins supple and sweet, then turns a bit youthfully disjointed-and less fine-grained than other recent vintages. Smoky dark fruit flavors are firmed by solid tannins and pick up a peppery note on the finish. This was aged for 22 months in small oak barrels and has the tannins to prove it. (ID)
