Charred meat, black currant, and wet stone characterize the bouquet of Jadot’s 2005 Clos Vougeot. Savory, salty, brightly-fruited and invigoratingly juicy on the palate, this displays more energy and acidity than I would have expected from the appellation. For all of the clarity and juiciness of this wine’s fruit, grilled meat and stony earthiness combined with the emergence of formidable tannins and subtle but persistent cyanic and iodine notes to turn its formidably long finish somewhat austere. But this is going to result in an exciting rendition of its terroir if left in the dark for at least 6-8 years. (DS)
As it has been all its life, the '05 Clos de Vougeot remains quite reserved though aggressive swirling eventually coaxes notably ripe dark berry liqueur-like aromas that are cut with notes of warm earth, leather and underbrush. There is excellent concentration to the broad-shouldered, powerful and intense flavors that possess an impressive level of sappy dry extract, all wrapped in a driving, youthfully austere and ever-so-mildly rustic finish. This is a classically styled example of the appellation that is clearly still very much evolving and to my taste one that will require at least another decade of bottle age first. In sum, this is impressive but still quite backward.
Good full red-ruby. Elegant aromas of black raspberry, black cherry and licorice. Dense, sappy and sweet, with outstanding mid-palate energy for such a smooth wine. Throws off notes of licorice, sandalwood, cola and minerals. Finishes very long and vibrant, with a powerful but integrated tannic structure and convincing minerality. A great vintage for this bottling. (ST)
Pure aromas and flavors of black cherry, blackberry and plum, with a dense profile and supple texture. Tightly wound now, with red currant and mineral elements that move in on the finish. Should become more elegant with time. Best from 2014 through 2035. (BS)
Firm deep crimson. Heady nose and clearly Grand cru quality and weight. Big weight of pretty chunky fruit – even a little raw – and then big bluserting tannis on the finish. Take notice of this wine! 17.5+/20 points. (JR)
