Smoke, black cherry and currant aromas are clean. Supple, elegant and balanced, this keeps the fruit at the forefront, ending with mild tannins. Drinks well already. (JL)
Sweeter nose than the Benziger. Molten with a strong lava flow undertow – from the Cab Franc? Quite firm and austere but classic. Quite distinctive for a Napa Valley red – much more ‘minerality’. 17.5/20 points (JR)
Bright red-ruby. Alluring nose offers scents of black raspberry, game, coffee, mocha, leather, graphite and sweet oak, along with a balsamic quality and a floral element, with some dusty brown-spice high notes providing lift. Then plush and seamless in the mouth, very ripe for this bottling, but with enticing floral and mineral lift to the redcurrant and tobacco flavors. Spicy and floral elements contribute to the impression of inner-mouth energy. Still a bit youthfully medicinal on the firmly tannic, very long finish. I suspect the tannins still need a few years to harmonize completely with the wine's fruit. (ST)
