An equal part blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2003 Mernet exhibits a dense ruby/purple color along with sweet, creamy cassis and floral notes that suggest high-elevation mountain vineyards. The palate is full-bodied, rich, youthful and surprisingly unevolved for a wine that is a decade in age. Crunchy acidity adds to the vibrancy of this big red, which appears to have two decades of positive evolution ahead of it. All five of these 2003s are extremely impressive. While I have not looked back at my notes from initial barrel and post-bottling tastings, these wines seem to be very special. (RP)
This leads off with new oak, the chocolate and cocoa scents keeping it black until enough air gets through to release some of the layers of earthiness underneath. It grows increasingly more intense, though the flavor detail has yet to evolve. For now, it's black and austere, with intimations of complexity. Check on it ten years from the vintage.
