Tasting Notes

94 points Robert Parker: " When I tasted Martinelli's 1996 Pinot Noir Martinelli Vineyard and 1996 Pinot Noir Martinelli Vineyard Reserve, I was reminded of my student days of Parent's gloriously decadent, rich Pinots. These are fascinating wines, offering gorgeous levels of smoky, meaty, earthy, black cherry fruit in a full-bodied, glycerin-imbued, lusty style that is about as hedonistic as Pinot Noir can be. While I was blown away by the 1996 Pinot Noir Martinelli Vineyard, the Reserve Pinot Noir was even more spectacular and amazingly concentrated. They have it all! Bottled unfined and unfiltered, they represent the essence of the Pinot Noir grape as translated by the Martinellis and their consultant winemaker, Helen Turley. Both wines should drink well for 5-6 years, perhaps longer, but I can't imagine anyone having enough discipline to hold onto these wines as long as they continue to drink as well as they do today." (12/1998 & 12/1997) 90 points Stephen Tanzer: "Darker red. Sappier, more perfumed aromas of kirsch, strawberry and smoky, spicy oak. Silky and stuffed with fruit, but supported by juicy ripe acidity. Really lovely balance. Clearly longer on the back end than the regular bottling, finishing with a tangy yet subtle berry flavor. A remarkably strong pinot for the vintage." (May/Jun 1998)
