Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Dark ruby/purple-hued with an extraordinary bouquet of flowers, forest floor, black cherry jam, currants, and blacker fruits, the 2005 Pinot Noir Garys’ Vineyard displays a broad, savory, full-bodied mouthfeel, remarkable length, and stunning opulence. It is a gorgeous Pinot to drink now and over the next decade. This brilliant Pinot Noir is among the finest produced in California.
Smooth and supple-textured, with a mix of smoky cherry, plum and raspberry-laced fruit that's deep and plush, ending with a long, tight, harmonious finish.
Named for the sounds of the coastal winds and mountain creeks of the Santa Lucia Highlands, Roar was launched in 2003 by Gary and Rosella Franscioni. The duo, along with Gary Pisoni and Adam and Dianna Lee of Siduri wines, helped catapult the Santa Lucia Highlands to fame with phenomenal, high-scoring vineyard-designated wines from Rosella's and Garys' Vineyards (the Franscionis co-own the latter with Pisoni). Aged for 11 months in 60% new French oak, the 2005 "Garys' Vineyard" Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir is medium-bodied and still a bit angular in its youth. It shows creamy blackberry and cherry aromas on the nose and layers of dark fruit, cinnamon and rhubarb on the palate. This elegant wine will continue to develop in the cellar for up to five years. Only 406 cases made.
