K&L Notes

89 points Wine Spectator: "Very good red with plum, berry and light mineral character. Medium-bodied, with good tannins and a long, caressing finish. Solid wine for the vintage. Best after 2005. 25,035 cases made" (03/04) From Robert Parker: "One of the two finest estates of Moulis (the other being Poujeaux), Chasse Spleen’s large vineyard is planted with 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot. The ripe, generous 2001 is a chunky, fleshy, deep ruby/purple-colored effort revealing good body, moderate tannin, and an earthy, black currant fruitiness offering notions of minerals and tree bark. Give it 2-3 years of cellaring to shed its substantial tannin, and drink it over the following decade." (06/04) And from Stephen Tanzer: "Good medium ruby. Pretty aromas of blackberry, cassis, violet and espresso. Fresh and penetrating, with moderate flesh and sweetness..." (May/June '02)

This is the dominant player in the Moulis appellation and the 2001 is currently plush, gentle and long with the signature acidity of the vintage keeping the mature flavors fresh and vibrant. The mid-palate of baked cherry pie, cedar box, clay and potpourri dominate but the finish is lingering and long.
