Deepish crimson without that much development at the rim. Firm, zesty, almost orange peel nose and then fruit that is just starting to melt and mature. Firm and confident with appealing freshness. Just starting to drink well though it should have many years ahead of it. 16.5/20
One of the two finest estates of Moulis (the other being Poujeaux), Chasse Spleen’s large vineyard is planted with 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot. The ripe, generous 2001 is a chunky, fleshy, deep ruby/purple-colored effort revealing good body, moderate tannin, and an earthy, black currant fruitiness offering notions of minerals and tree bark... Good medium ruby. Pretty aromas of blackberry, cassis, violet and espresso. Fresh and penetrating, with moderate flesh and sweetness...
Very good red with plum, berry and light mineral character. Medium-bodied, with good tannins and a long, caressing finish. Solid wine for the vintage. (JS)
