Allow me to cut through everything else and bluntly state that the '05 Clos des Corton Faiveley is quite simply the best young example of this wine that I have ever had the privilege of evaluating. A richly and densely fruited nose that is at once earthy and quite animale along with breathtaking complexity complements to perfection the big, rich and sleekly muscled flavors that are very firmly structured but again, not at all aggressive and the sheer depth of material on the palate-drenching finish is nothing short of phenomenal. To be sure, this is not and will not be a wine for even the moderately impatient and I'm not completely sure that 15 years will be sufficient to really see it at its best to buy it only with the (resolute) intention to allow it a long and comfortable cellar snooze. Remarkable.
One of Faiveley’s monopoles (wholly owned vineyards), Clos des Cortons makes powerful wines. That’s the case in 2005. This wine towers up, a strong edifice of tannins and big, black fruits. It has all the right elements coming into place, along with weight and some elegance. *Cellar Selection* (RV)
Gorgeous aromas of ripe, sappy cherry and wild berry fruit, with floral notes. Racy and firm, with intensity and a strong mineral element. It's bolstered by dense tannins, but has the fruit to match. Give this time to reveal its facets. (BS)
Good deep red. Musky raspberry, brown spices, game and smoke on the highly nuanced nose. Suave, dense and deep if a bit youthfully musclebound today; conveys a powerful impression of energy and mounts impressively with air. Finishes quite tight, even a bit youthfully dry-edged, with pepper and herbal notes. (ST) 93+
Sitting in its oak at the moment, this wine is dense and warm with cherry flavor. The acidity and the tannin stand apart, with a chipped limestone character against the fruit juiciness. There's a substantial wine here, needing cellar time to meld.
Closed on the nose at first, then wafts of spicy fruit like dry mulled wine, then peppery warmth. Powerful black fruit with a surprising lightness of touch across the mid palate and then a fine supple finish. Leaves the mouth feeling fresh and ready for the next sip. Great delicacy. Excellent. 18.5/20 points (JR)
