Part of Stag's Leap Wine Cellars' Napa Valley Collection, the 2005 Napa Valley Merlot is crafted with the same attention to detail as the limited-production estate wines, but they use fruit form independent growers to supplement (and complement) the estate fruit that goes into the blend. In 2005 the resulting wine is vibrant and immediately drinkable. Red fruit dominates the aromatic profile of this wine, though subtle notes of anise, vanilla and cardamom peek through, too. Similar flavors cross the palate with red plum and nutmeg adding depth. Velvety tannins and naturally fresh acidity make this a food-friendly, well-balanced wine that would pair well with a variety of dishes from pork tenderloin to prosciutto to a juicy burger just off the grill.
