92 points and two stars from the Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: "Deep, highly extracted and downright brooding with a slow-to-unfold nose of blackberries, plums and abundant Syrah spice, this big, broad-shouldered, slightly sinewy wine delivers on the promise of substance and size with dense, dark-fruit flavors and spice to spare. Its puckery back-end tannins summarily preclude any near-term enjoyment, but its sins of toughness are those of youth, and its strong sense of fruit is insurance enough that it will grow for six to ten years." (July 2008) A new label from the folks at Red Car, Vinyl was inspired by 2005s memorial wine to Mark Estrin, a syrah named Twenty Two. Identical to Speakeasy, this California syrah has been aged an additional six months in 500 liter puncheons. It's remarkably dark, like your favorite rocker, its remarkable color coming from the addition of just a little viognier and rousanne. Like the Les Claypool of wine, Vinyl is a leather-clad blend of blue fruit, anise, pine pitch, fressia and ground seasheels. Medium-bodied, but intense, this is the wine you'll enjoy time and again, always discovering something new.
