A mushroomy note to begin with, then the classic truffle and tobacco after some time in the glass. Both red and black fruits in evidence here, and coiled energy, held in reserve; flavoury, chunky tannins calve from the fruit in the mouth. (AJ)
Shows complex, subtle aromas of fruit and black olive, with hints of milk chocolate and ripe fruit. Develops wonderfully in the glass. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and beautiful sweet berry and light vanilla fruit character. Refined and balanced. This is very, very impressive. (JM)
Certainly it is firm, with impressive power. But the smoothness of the ripe black fruits as they combine with the beautifully judged wood show a contrast of tension with the dense, chewy core. At its heart, this wine is dark and solid and concentrated, promising long aging. *Cellar Selection* (RV)
Saturated ruby-red. Pure, fresh aromas of blackcurrant, black cherry, mocha and licorice, lifted by a whiff of violet. Dense, sweet and stuffed with fruit, offering liqueur-like flavors of black cherry and mocha; remains very light on its feet thanks to wonderfully vibrant, harmonious acidity. For such a strapping wine, this boasts very good energy and noteworthy precision. Finishes long and ripely tannic, with repeating notes of milk chocolate and violet. Jean-Claude Berrouet considers this to be 'an absolutely classic Trotanoy.' I couldn't agree more: it ought to prove to be one of the best 15 or 20 wines of a stellar vintage. (ID) 96+
Tasted at the Trotanoy vertical in Hong Kong, the 2005 Trotanoy has been an awesome Pomerol since birth. Now at 12 years old, the "giant" is beginning to flex its muscles. It has more red than black fruit, more floral than the likes of the 2000 or 2001, beautifully defined with raspberry coulis, wild strawberry, clove and bay leaf, iris and violet unfurling with continued aeration. The palate has a pleasurable grainy texture and fine salinity. The acidity is extremely well judged, and there is the structure and backbone, perhaps even the stubbornness that defines this great vineyard. There is enormous potential here. (NM)
This has a captivating nose of blueberries, spices, and fresh lilacs. On the palate this offers a full body, serious intensity, and great acidity and richness. This is a wonderful wine that shows great contrast and wildness.
Ironically, as Trotanoy is one of my personal favorites in all of Bordeaux, I had never had the opportunity to cross paths with the 2005 Château Trotanoy prior to the Wine Workshop tasting. This is destined to be a great vintage of Trot, which I have little doubt will end up superior to the more muscular 2010 that seems to have caught the imagination of so many commentators. The combination of ripeness and outstanding acidity that is found in the very best 2005s is very rare, and these qualities are certainly on display in this very young and potentially profound Trotanoy. The very young bouquet offers up a primary blend of black plums, black cherries, dark chocolate, woodsmoke, a touch of the gamebird to come, a lovely base of soil, incipient notes of nutskin and a lovely base of smoky new oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, young and rock solid at the core, with stunning focus and balance, ripe tannins, lovely, tangy acids and superb length and grip on the glorious finish. This will be a legendary Trotanoy, but it is going to take a long time to climb to cruising altitude. It should be almost timeless.
