This has really nice drive, with a racy beam of raspberry and linzer torte pushing through the sweet mocha-tinged structure up front, while pushed by a mouthwatering minerality on the back end. There's a lovely raspberry and black pepper encore on the finish. Drink now through 2025. (JM)
While Julien didn’t submit his Reserve to the retrospective, the 2005 Châteauneuf du Pape Fiancee showed brilliantly. Made from equal parts Grenache (100-year-old vines) and Syrah that was vinified together in concrete tank before aging in smaller barrels, it offers up a terrific bouquet of cassis and blackberry fruits, licorice, peppered meats and Provencal herbs. Full-bodied, rich, and still structured, with striking purity, this is a serious effort that should hit full maturity in another 2-3 years and thrill through 2025. (JD)
Deep ruby. Smoky raspberry and licorice aromas, with a complex array of garrigue, fresh flowers and spices building with air. Vibrant cherry and dark berry flavors are youthfully gripping and finely etched, becoming more tannic on the palate-staining finish. Very young and more brooding than the Pure; give it some cellar time. (JR) 93+
