91 points Wine Enthusiast: This is one of the few Zinfandels with a Rutherford appellation. It's quite a good wine, deliciously easy to drink with its creamy texture and dry, soft flavors of blackberries, currants, chocolate and licorice, made all the more zesty with peppery spices. Great job by veteran winemaker Scott McCleod." (06/09) The American wine industry owes a lot to the streak of Italian immigrants who poured into our country in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They brought with them a great winegrowing culture and, occasionally, some vines to plant - a little reminder of home. While Francis Ford Coppola's grandfather Francesco Pennino was never directly involved in the wine business (he started a music publishing and import company called Edizione Pennino), it is in the spirit of his immigrant experience that Rubicon Estate makes Edizione Pennino Zinfandel. Made entirely of estate-grown, organically farmed zinfandel, this luscious, dense wine has a hint of the Old World to it, and a hint of the New. Aromas of briar fruit, white pepper and a hint of sweet basil are followed by juicy blueberry and blackberry fruit and lots of spice. And while the palate is full-bodied and ripe, there's a pretty acid core that sings like one of Pennino's songs.
