Tasting Notes

This was the 2nd vintage from Sean Allison-released to us again in 2019. I’m excited to introduce to you our latest DI – Direct import from Bordeaux; Ch. L’Avocat from the small commune of Cerons which is located just north of Barsac and Sauternes in the southern Graves appellation. I met Nicola Allison at a small conference of Women from Bordeaux and Napa Valley in Napa earlier this year. She followed my advice by sending her wines to our hotel in April to be tasted and Clyde and I liked them. I followed up by visiting the estate almost eight weeks later and was shown the gravely, plateau vineyards by her husband Sean who manages the vines. The vineyards were purchased by the Allisons in 2002; the fruit was previously sold to Mouton Rothschild. 300 feet above the Garrone river, the vineyards have stunning views of the lovely Côtes de Bordeaux, this elevation is a key factor for great drainage and the soil is loaded with different color gravels that impart the textbook minerality both their whites and reds feature. The 2004 Rouge is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon 40% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. The wine features mid-weight black fruit with good freshness, hints of smoke and textbook earth and minerality. This made using the painstaking “Vinification Integrale” process, where the hand-picked fruit is macerated on the skins inside the barrel for three weeks, then aged in new oak for 18 months. After 15 years, this wine is one seriously sexy sipper for $29.99. It has a rich dark fruit core framed by toasty oak, with hints of smoked meats and aged leather. The tannins are round and silky smooth, and the wine is overall still very fresh and vibrant. As the resident Bordeaux expert Ralph Sands put it after tasting it blind, “We thought it was Margaux, Margaux.”

Gorgeous aromatics of roasted plums and lead pencil are interlaced with a perfume of violets and sassafras. With the bottle age, the structure is becoming more fine and polished. What an absolute pleasure!

This quite special bottling from l'Avocat is showing quite magnificently now. A very elegant woodsy, forest floor aromatics, that evolves into plums, cassis, and cocoa on the palate. Seamless tannins. Very elegant indeed.
