My favorite again, however, remains the 2006 Syrah James Berry Vineyard. There is just something so delineated and complex about the wines from this site. Additionally, they seem to have more acidity, yet also the enormous richness and massive fruit extract. Blackberries, cassis, truffle, charcoal, and some subtle smoke are all present in this wine, which comes closest to a top-notch Hermitage from this area of Paso Robles. Long, rich, with striking minerality, this is a blockbuster Syrah that should age effortlessly for 10-15+ years....One of my favorite California wine producers, Wells Guthrie, like a champion truffle-hunting dog, seems to unearth top vineyards for his wines. *Tasting note 12/2007; no tasting note on 95 point rating from 12/2008* (RP)
Deep, bright ruby. Intensely perfumed nose offers an array of red and dark berry scents, along with Asian spices, smoky minerals and fresh violet. Broad and sappy, with fresh raspberry and blackberry flavors, a velvety texture and a slow-building licorice quality. Seemed to gain freshness and energy with air, while completely absorbing its suave tannins. Pretty impressive stuff. (ST)
