Produced from fruit hailing from the Figgins’s Mill Creek Upland Vineyard as well as the Seven Hills and Pepper Bridge Vineyards, the 2003 Sangiovese explodes from the glass with fantastic aromas of spicy black fruits, licorice, and tar. Broad, intense, and concentrated, this medium to full-bodied wine is layered with luxurious waves of black cherries. Pure, well-balanced, and long, it is the finest American Sangiovese I have tasted to date. (PR)
(includes 18% Syrah) Bright, deep red. Aromatically complex nose combines plum, dried rose, tar, cedar, animal fur and smoked meat. Juicy, intensely flavored and penetrating, with sappy, sharply delineated flavors of red berries, flowers and spices. Impressively refreshing, structured Sangiovese, finishing firmly tannic and quite long. Leonetti's singular Sangiovese has occasionally been criticized for its new oak component, but I find this release, aged in less than 50% new barrels, to be quite Tuscan in style. (ST)
