Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
From this iconic winery in Napa, the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon (93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot) was aged 21 months in French oak with 60% new. No shy wine at 14.7% alcohol, it has a youthful, dense purple color, freshness and acidity, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, and pure crème de cassis and blackberry fruit along with spring flowers. (RP)
A trim style dominated by edgy herb, dried berry, loamy earth and tobacco leaf notes, this will appeal to those who favor a more restrained style. The tannins are showing no signs of easing up. (JL, Web Only-2015)
Everywhere you turn a wine geek is proclaiming the glory of the 2005 vintage across the globe. Dare you believe them? Of course! Wine geeks don't lie. We get giddy when Mother Nature casts a fond eye toward the vineyards. Perhaps the great weather was a thank-you to wineries like Grgich Hills that have started farming using organic and biodynamic principles. The 2005 Grgich cab comes from these carefully tended vines, predominantly from Yountville, though some Rutherford and Calistoga fruit balances out the blend. The little bottle packs a lot of class, with anise, black plum and currant fruit with a spike of peppery spice on the finish. Acid, fruit and tannin are all in harmony here.
