Still showing a youthful, primary profile, the 2007 Domaine Grand Veneur Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Origines (a blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, and 20% Syrah that’s aged partially in new barrels) is a thrilling Châteauneuf-du-Pape that delivers pure, clean aromas of crème de cassis, mineral, sweet tobacco, lavender, spring flowers, and graphite to go with a full-bodied, concentrated, and impeccably put together palate feel. Despite the modern elevage, it has soaked up all traces of its stint in oak and shows brilliantly pure fruit, a focused texture, and an overall classic, elegant southern Rhône character. Needing the better part of the evening to fully flesh out, this age-worthy ’07 should continue to improve over the coming 3-4 years, and drink well through 2027.
I'd wager one of the finest examples of this cuvée ever made (the 2009 and 2010 will give it run for its money), the sensational 2007 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée les Origines from the Jaume family is a perfect example of a modern styled Châteauneuf du Pape that never loses its Southern Rhône soul. Made from 50% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre and 20% Syrah that was aged in equal parts barrels and tanks, it offers a ripe, pedal-to-the-metal bouquet of ripe black fruits, charred meats, pan drippings, saddle leather and garrigue that continues to open up with time in the glass. On the palate, it's full-bodied, beautifully concentrated and layered, with sweet, sweet tannin and a great finish. This closed down shortly after release but is just now staring to show its true potential. Drink bottles anytime over the coming decade. (JD)
Solid, with a mix of red and black currant fruit held together with notes of pastis, licorice and violet. A good dash of grip on the finish keeps this honest. Opens nicely in the glass. (JM)
(50% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 20% Mourvedre) Glass-staining violet. Showing a lot of oak on the nose, along with deep raspberry and blackberry scents and a smoky mineral quality. Lush, creamy and rich in the mouth, with sweet red and dark berry compote flavors, slow-building tannins and serious finishing punch. This sexy fruit bomb will be even better if the oakiness recedes with some bottle age. (JR) 90+
Pretty, floral elements on the nose. Rather restrained and feminine. A little low key with tannins just very slightly austere. 17/20
