90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Full medium ruby. Aromas of crushed blackberry, licorice, chocolatey oak and clove oil. Supple, sweet and full, but with lively acidity giving excellent delineation to the fresh blackberry and spice flavors. With its polished tannins and note of fruity peppercorn, the finish shows excellent lift." (Jan/Feb 10) Produced from 70 year old vines in the Medrano district of Mendoza, vines which yield a tiny 1 lb of fruit per plant, the newest release of Quimera is, as always, a well structured, beautiful example of restraint in this Bordeaux styled blend of Malbec, Cab and Merlot. Deep currant fruit as well as some red fruit aromas lead to a tightly structured palate, that is primary (i.e. the fruit is prominent) as well as tense and framed by not only the youthful tannins, but good acidity as well. This is serious wine for the cellar - either decant for a few hours and enjoy with a steak, or check back in a few years.
