I’ll keep my notes brief, but my favorites in 2003 include the Marston Vineyard on Spring Mountain as well as the Quarry, Rancho del Oso, and Steinhauer vineyards.
Bright ruby. Black cherry, licorice and a hint of eucalyptus on the nose. Powerful and gripping in the mouth, with black fruit and violet flavors and a surprisingly suave texture. Strong tannins arrive late. A somewhat tough, old-fashioned, penetrating wine that will need at least four or five years of aging.
