An uncommon red-wine grape grown in California's Napa Valley and Mendocino County, Charbono wines are very dark in color and tend to be both tannic and acidic (hence long aging). Charbono is thought to have links to Corbeau (or Charbonneau), a rare French variety, but its true ancestry is mysterious. Vince Tofanelli grows some of the best Charbono in the Napa Valley--though it must be noted that the rare variety only holds on to six dozen or so acres in all of California--on traditionally head-trained vines. From the winery: "Our Vieux-Os old vine program brings together Napa Valley's most notable and historic family-owned and family-farmed single vineyard estates in one portfolio. All combined, our Vieux-Os wine program represents more than 250 years of estate grape growing experience and heritage."
