The prodigious 2006 Cherry Red (64% Zinfandel, 18% Syrah, and 18% Mourvèdre) smells like the essence of cherry jam interwoven with framboise, licorice, garrigue, and earth. Fabulous ripeness, a beautiful medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, and stunning elegance result in a terrific example of what Paso Robles can produce when blends are done by a talented viticulturist and winemaker. Vivid red color. Wide-open, red-fruit dominated nose is complicated by Asian spices and smoky minerals; there's a pinot-like elegance to this that I find pretty alluring. Sweet raspberry and candied cherry flavors are gently firmed by dusty tannins, which also add back-end grip. Finishes with impressive clarity and no rough edges. This is admirably graceful and balanced. (JR)
