The 2007 Quinta do Noval is one of the most powerful and pure examples of this wine that I have ever had the pleasure to taste. There will be no Nacional bottling this year, as the entire production of Nacional has gone into the vintage bottling of Noval. The bouquet on the 2007 Quinta do Noval is magical, with its bottomless depth and glorious purity combining to offer up a magical mélange of black cherries, dark plums, black raspberries, a touch of tar, bitter chocolate, a great base of soil, fennel seed and cedary wood. This really smells of young Nacional this year. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and beautifully balanced, with a rock solid core, stunning purity, firm, substantial tannins, stunningly tangy acids and profound length and grip on the endless finish. It is a good thing that Quinta do Noval did not make a Nacional in 2007, as it would probably have to be scored in excess of a hundred! This is clearly the greatest young vintage of Quinta do Noval that I have ever had the pleasure to taste. (Drink between 2030-2130) 97+ points

Noval's replanting in the 1990s included a high proportion of touriga nacional, which shows in this wine as a dynamic and resonant blueberry blue. There's also boysenberry, pomegranate, bosky cherry and schist. It's ornate and vibrant-the potent fruit suspended by the tannin, then exploding into luscious chocolate blackness; the finish is notably refreshing. With several days of air, this wine's massive extract takes on a slightly bitter edge, suggesting it may not be the longest lived of the great 2007s. Nevertheless it is one of the keepers-likely to reach its peak in the 30-year range and to coast for years beyond that.

The 2007 Quinta do Noval Vintage Port is a star of the vintage. Dense purple-colored, it gives up an already complex aromatic array of lavender, Asian spices, incense, and an amalgam of black fruits with a hint of chocolate in the background. Plush and mouth-filling, this large-scaled Port manages an uncanny blending of elegance and power. Long and savory in the finish, it will continue to blossom for another 20+ years and drink well through its 50th birthday if not longer. (JM)

Very complex, with intense aromas of squeezed tangerine, blackberry and blueberry. Full-bodied, medium sweet and chewy. Extracted yet balanced, with an intense fruity and grapey character. Tight and reserved on the finish. Best after 2015. (JS)

Very dark and glossy purple. Intensely muscular, aromatic nose and then much sweeter on the palate than the nose suggests. Chewy still and a tad raw but there is no shortage of raw material here! Lots of grip but it's smothered by the ripe fruit. Very flattering. Lots of energy (they have kept some 2007 Nacional in barrel but used some in this blend). (JR)
