A blockbuster effort displaying lavish richness as well as extraordinary finesse, elegance, and freshness, the dark ruby/purple-tinged 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Petits Pieds d’Armand was fashioned from ancient vines planted in 1899 in the famed sector known as La Crau. Aged in tank and a few demi-muids, it exhibits sumptuous aromas of kirsch liqueur, spring flowers, licorice, the seaweed wrapper used in sushi restaurants called Nori, and hints of pepper and spice. Revealing enormous richness, purity, finesse, elegance, and impeccable balance, this stunning wine is one of the vintage’s most compelling examples of ancient vine Grenache made in an unmanipulated style with no make-up. It can be drunk now or cellared for two decades. (RP)
Shows the ripeness of the vintage, with a touch more intensity than most, as a wide range of inviting blueberry, plum, fig and boysenberry flavors are spiked with sweet spice, graphite and licorice notes. The long, rounded finish has great buried grip. Drink now through 2030. (JM)
Saturated ruby. Highly perfumed, spicy aromas of raspberry, Asian spices, garrigue and anise. Pliant red and dark berry flavors stain the palate, enlivened by zesty cinnamon and white pepper qualities. Finishes sweet, with a gentle snap of smoky minerals. (JR)
An outstanding wine that wears the vintage characteristics well, the 2007 Domaine Olivier Hillaire Châteauneuf-du-Pape is perfumed and nuanced with incense, licorice, kirsch, flowers and subtle garrigue aromas on the nose. The palate is medium to full bodied with an integrated, balanced character, a silky smooth texture and a long, rich finish. Lively acidity keeps the wine fresh and given the moderate tannin and upfront appeal, I’d recommend drinking these over the next 8 to 10 years.
Dark and glowing. Looks very healthy. Extremely complex nose – so much going on! Very archetypal Châteauneuf-du-Pape with hints of animal, leather and masses of sweet, ripe fruit. This one pretty much explodes – already. Go for it! It should give enormous amounts of early to mid-term pleasure. Very long with notes of tea leaves and real richness. Outstanding. 18/20
