K&L Notes

91(+?) points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "eep ruby-red. Pungent, expressive bouquet displays blackberry, boysenberry, cracked pepper and smoky mineral scents, with nuances of pipe tobacco and herbs adding complexity. Broad and sweet but also spicy, with tangy red and dark berry flavors and a sexy suggestion of candied flowers. Closes down on the finish, with the spice and pepper notes repeating. This benefited from air and should be even better with a few more years of bottle aging." (Nov/Dec '09) 90 points Wine Spectator: "This intense, firm red is marked by full-bodied, beefy currant, cranberry, herb and sage flavors that are focused, complex, long and persistent. Drink now through 2014. 190 cases made." (12/09) The Santa Lucia Highlands have fast become one of California's top spots for growing winegrapes - comibing altitude, soil and the climactic influences from Monterey Bay. This is Big Basin's third vintage from this vineyard, and it really shows the year's spectacular character. With Chinese Five Spice, black pepper, anise and red fruit aromas, this full-bodied wine promises a lot and delivers. Red fruit, white pepper, cedar, baon fat and spice, with a hint if citrus zest round out the palate of this mouthcoating wine. Exuberant in its youth, it will develop nicely over time and should drink well for the next decade.
