The nosing passes pick up seductive aromatic notes of toasted walnut, dried red fruits, marzipan, black pepper, spices, cocoa and marshmallow. Entry is zesty, fruity, candied and almost Sherry-like; the midpalate bursts with flavors of cocoa, dark chocolate, chocolate covered almond, coffee, tobacco and dark caramel. Ends smooth, silky, toffee sweet and honeyed. Wow. *Classic/Highest Recommendation*
This is what Buffalo Trace refers to as their "Rye Recipe" bourbon. It is not a straight rye whiskey, but instead a straight bourbon whiskey with a larger proportion of rye grain than the normal Buffalo Trace recipe. Most bourbon has a recipe, or "mashbill," of more than 80% corn with the second or small grain being rye, and a bit of barley to aid in fermentation. Basically, what we have here is a recipe that calls for more rye than the standard bourbon recipe (say 25% rather than the standard 15%). It is still more than 51% corn and therefore is technically still a bourbon whiskey, but has some of the flavor characteristics of a rye whiskey. Please do not confuse this product with a straight rye whiskey. It is not rye whiskey, but a wonderfully spicy and delicious bourbon! (David Othenin-Girard, K&L Spirits buyer)
